There is nothing like a good old gruesome and gory demise in a horror film for me it can make or break a movie. The more graphic, innovative and gory the better I say! After much deliberation The Gore Splattered Corner presents our Top 20 most memorable death scenes for your delectation…. enjoy 🙂 CONTAINS GORE, but then would you expect anything less! (and spoilers…)
1: Opening scene, Suspiria (1977)
This scene is from the opening moments of the amazing Italian horror master’s story of witchcraft at a ballet school. Argento surely did know how to portray a good death, and this demonstrates just why. It has it all, cracking soundtrack, stabbing, hanging, gore, art decor interiors! Pure class.
2. Splinter in the eye, Zombie Flesh Eaters (1979)
Testament to why the Italians have always been the true masters of horror, this is one scene once watched you will never forget. Think you are safe behind that door missus, think again!
3. Jane’s Death, Tenebre (1982)
Mr Argento does it again, no quick hack and run with this one, amputation and blood splatter galore. We salute you Dario Argento, two titles in our top three!
4. Drill scene, City of The Living Dead (1980)
Yet another Italian master and second clip from Lucio Fulci, you really don’t want to piss this girl’s father off he has some pretty impressive power tools and he’s not afraid to use them.
5. The Death of Captain Rhodes, Day of the Dead (1985)
When this guy realises he is about to become an all you can eat buffet for a pack of ravenous zombies, he isn’t going down without a fight, ‘Choke on em…’, pure 80’s gold!
6. Jennifer’s Death, Nightmare on Elm Street, Dream Warriors (1987)
Now there had to be a Freddy in here somewhere and we did toy with putting the Johnny Depp gore bed scene in here, yes it’s good, but this is far more entertaining! Welcome to prime time Bitch, how I would love to do this to some of those wanna be reality TV ‘stars’.
7. Kiss of Death, 28 Weeks Later (2007)
I was just shocked by the brutality of this scene when I first watched it, as it was just so unexpected. Why you shouldn’t kiss your loved one when they have the lurgy.
8. The Raft Scene, The Burning (1981)
Massive spoiler alert on this one! This is the scene that seriously annoyed the British Censors and got The Burning on the video nasties list (watch out for a very small debut role as almost an extra Holly Hunter waving from the river bank).
9. The Bathroom Scene, Pieces (1982)
We were out there playing tennis and that bastard was in there killing her!!
10. Nobu’s Death, Battle Royale (2000)
The first rule of Battle Royale is don’t break the rules! Fantastic Asian cinema at it’s best.
11. The Ending, The Wicker Man (1973)
MASSIVE SPOILER DO NOT WATCH THIS CLIP IF YOU HAVEN’T ALREADY SEEN THE FILM
Just blew me away the first time I saw it, Christopher Lee doing pagan chanting, horrific (shame he took the woman’s wig off beforehand it would have made it even more memorable).
12. The Tramp Scene, Driller Killer (1979)
This is what happens if an annoying rock band move into the flat below you and stop you getting some proper shut eye. A lesson to all those who think that getting anything less than your required 8 hours is acceptable.
13. The Bathtub Scene, I Spit On Your Grave (1978)
Here’s one to make your eyes water, revenge is sweet, so sweet in fact it’s painful.
14. Jesus Wept, Hellraiser (1987)
(SPOILER) She summoned them, they came, his suffering will be legendary even in hell.
15. Quint becomes tuna, Jaws (1977)
(SPOILER BUT THEN IF YOU HAVEN’T SEEN THIS WHAT PLANET HAVE YOU BEEN LIVING ON?!) Yes they really did need a bigger boat. Watching films like this as a kid, it’s no wonder I grew up so disturbed!
16. Decapitation, The Omen (1976)
The Omen has a couple of other memorable deaths, The Nanny, The Priest, but we like this one the best. Satan shows Keith heads will roll if anyone tries to get in his way.
17. Party’s Over, Return of the Living Dead (1985)
The party is over for Trash but then that’s what you get for parading around naked in the graveyard late at night missy!
18. Opening scene- Ghost Ship (2002)
A mildly entertaining ghost movie with the most epic opening scene.
19. Chainsaw scene, American Psycho (2000)
There’s nothing more disturbing than a naked yuppie with a chainsaw, just don’t touch the fucking face or Patrick Bateman is going to open up a whole can of whoop ass on you.
20. Car Crash, Death Proof- Quentin Tarantino (2007)
I have to say I am not a big fan of this movie, it’s ok, but I prefered Planet Terror, but it has one of the most kick ass car crash scenes in it that I will never forget!
